HISTORY TOUR TO THE OPEN-AIR MUSEUM OF THE GREAT WAR. In the footsteps of the First World War in the Lagazuoi-5 Torri area. Pass a fascinating day reliving the past, witnessing the extraordinary traces left by mountain warfare in the Ampezzo Dolomites.
In the area between Lagazuoi and the 5 Torri you can explore the largest open air museum in existence dedicated to World War One: tragedy and beauty mingle in the remains left by the cruel warfare waged in terrible conditions between Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops between 1915 and 1918.
From Passo Falzarego you take the cable car up to 2,752 metres on Monte Lagazuoi. From the Lagazuoi Refuge's spectacular terrace you have a 360° view of the world's most beautiful mountains, dominated by the nearby peaks of Mt. Marmolada and the Tofana Massif.
Supplied with a kit for negotiating via ferratas and a head torch, you are guided along the rock ledge below the refuge. This leads to the mouth of the tunnel hacked out of the rock of the Piccolo Lagazuoi mountain. The tunnel was made by Italian soldiers who, from the Martini Ledge at the base of the Piccolo Lagazuoi, tunnelled stubbornly through the mountain in order to surprise the Austrian troops stationed on the summit. With its metal ropes and stairs still intact, this astonishing feat bears witness to the superhuman effort involved in this tragic war. By following the main ledge, you finally rejoin the path which runs beside the Lagazuoi piste and so descend to Passo Falzarego. By car, it's a short drive to the car park of the 5 Torri ski lift, from which you ride up to the Scoiattoli Refuge. Here a brief lunch-stop will be a good idea, from another spectacular viewpoint over "the 5 Towers".
After lunch, the visit to the Great War Museum resumes. The trenches begin just below the Scoiattoli (or "Squirrels") Refuge. Various historical information signs accompany you on the path which winds along beneath the 5 Torri peaks, where you will encounter numerous walkways, patrol routes, defensive positions and partially reconstructed barracks.
