LETTERS TO JULIET, VERONA. THE EXTRAORDINARY PHENOMENON OF "JULIET'S MAIL" There is a place in Verona where thousands of letters addressed to Shakespeare’s heroine are kept, answered and filed. The Juliet Club opens its offices to offer a unique experience to those who want to experience a special day dedicated to love and writing.
There is a place in Verona where people who suffer can leave a message to ask Juliet for help” (from the film “Letters to Juliet)
The Juliet Club has been handling Juliet’s mail for many years; this unique phenomenon has made Verona the world-wide known “capital of love”. Addressed to “Juliet, Verona” thousands of letters arrive from all over the world and our team of volunteers replies to each and every one of them in the name of the most famous heroine in literature.
The story of the Juliet letters starts in the 1930’s when Ettore Solimani, the guardian of Juliet’s Tomb, began gathering the first letters people left at the grave and, moved by this phenomenon, he started replying, thus becoming the first “Juliet’s secretary”.
In our technological era, dominated by instant messages that have no time, nor space (text messages, emails, whatsapp, etc.), hand-written letters keep on being the privileged means to express feelings. There are still thousands of people in all countries that take a pen and a sheet of paper in order to write to Juliet. Perhaps we contact a real person by phone or email, while we prefer paper and pen to reach a mythical character.
Thanks to Juliet’s secretaries each letter is read, translated, answered and then kept in our one-of-a-kind archive, that contains thousands of love stories and countless words of love. The Juliet Club now offers a unique opportunity to visitors: the chance to visit its offices, meet the secretaries and literally touch the thousands of letters that arrive by mail from all over the world. It is also possible to become “Juliet for one day” and to reply to some of the original letters kept in this very special office.
Verona, thanks to Shakespeare, goes beyond its geographical and touristic boundaries to enter those of emotion and symbol, thus becoming a place of the soul.
It’s a place where dreams are kept and can even come true.
By reading the words written in all languages in the world, contained in the thousands of envelopes kept at the Juliet Club, anyone can realize how exceptionally powerful the story of Romeo and Juliet is and how the universal value of love is the only true bond linking human beings.
Love is the most extraordinary source of energy that nourishes the people living on this wonderful planet.

The Juliet Club is a cultural association that has been active for many years promoting the legend of Romeo and Juliet. The Club’s main activity is handling “Juliet’s mail”: every year thousands of letters, often simply addressed to “Juliet, Verona, Italy”, pour in from all over the world and Juliet’s secretaries translate and reply to them all. This unique and fascinating phenomenon has become a tradition that is part of the history of our romantic city.

Shakespeare’s legend and the “writing for love” phenomenon has led the Club to organize several other events besides answering the letters, such as the “Dear Juliet” Prize to the best letters (every year on Valentine’s Day), the Literary Prize “Writing for Love” (awarded in October to the best romantic novel) and the "Juliet's Birthday", two days of celebration in honor of the young Capulet (September 5th and 6th).
