VENICE MUSIC PROJECT, BAROQUE MUSIC IN VENICE In the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista with the orchestra Venetia Antiqua. We are pleased to announce the third season of Venice Music Project, the series of Early Music concerts performed by Venetia Antiqua in the beautiful Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice. Comprised of internationally acclaimed musicians, who all live in the Serenissima, the ensemble has specialized in a repertoire dedicated to the great tradition of Baroque Music, played on period instruments or exact copies thereof, according to performance practices of the time.

Protagonist of Venetia Antiqua is soprano Liesl Odenweller, a versatile American artist who has been critically acclaimed in Europe and North America for concerts and operas sung in important venues including Carnegie Hall, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro San Carlo, Auditorium di Milano and Avery Fisher Hall. Both she and the musicians continue to perform with the world’s most famous orchestras (Venice Baroque Orchestra, Solisti Veneti, Santa Fe Pro Musica) and conductors (Andrea Marcon, Alan Curtis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, ecc) and in the most important festivals and theaters around the world, also recording for important studios and labels(Sony, Arts, Deutsche Grammophon, Towerhill, etc).

In the musical panorama of the city, this is an exciting new level of excellence, which has in recent years received rave reviews not only from critics specialized in the field, but also from their public, both Italian and foreign, who have permitted themselves a leap into the past in a church that in Venice is one of the lesser known, but certainly not lesser in terms of its great interest. A portion of the introits of the season has been designated for the restoration of the church dedicated to Saint John, protector of men of culture, writers, editors, and theologists.

There are sixty concerts on this year’s program, from March to November, with repertoire alternating between well-known, beloved pieces and unpublished works never heard in modern times, which are the fruits of many hours of musical research. In particular, the group is proud to continue its rediscovery of the great composer, Johann Adolf Hasse, Venetian by adoption, a foray into Greek myths set to music by Venetian and other composers, the opera omnia of Vivaldi’s motets for solo voice and orchestra, and further performances of the orignal pastiche "A Venetian Affair" in collaboration with the author Andrea di Robilant.

The stage is dominated by the musicians of Venetia Antiqua, but there are also numerous appointments with international guest artists, who will offer their own interpretations of a repertoire considered to be the “popular music” of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the principal guest artists are Dvulcis in Fvundo, Consort Veneto, Seraphim Solo Vocal Ensemble (UK), Quartetto Andrea Palladio.

“We will Ba-ROCK you!” is the motto of the series, recently recommended by the New York Times as one of the top events not to miss in “36 Hours in Venice.”
