CULTURAL TOUR: WATCHING CRAFTSMANSHIP AT WORK Discover traditional skills and craft activities: a centuries-old heritage flourishing in Cortina. Cortina has long been famous as a home to craftsmanship, rich in traditions passed down from one generation to another across the centuries. Various kinds of skilled specialists create unique hand-crafted objects, where personal touches and imperfections constitute the originality and value of each piece, which frequently deserves to be considered a work of art.
A special tour to various artisan workshops to watch master craftsmen passionately working at their various materials... experience a journey back through time, rediscovering ancient skills, secrets and traditions.
Woodworkers work mainly with larch and pine, the typical trees of the Ampezzo Valley, but they also thrive on crafting wood from far away, such as teak and ebony. They work mainly on "recent" wood, but also on "aged" used wood recovered from old mountain farms and huts. They are always happy to create furnishings and items specially commissioned by customers.
Metalworkers work their metals – mainly iron – rigorously by hand, aiming always to combine elegance with practicality. They produce and decorate a huge variety of hand-crafted articles, from lamps to bathroom accessories, stove and fireplace implements, stair railings, door handles and assorted hardware.
Wood, iron... and other materials. Cortina also boasts various expert artisans specialised in applying their skills and creativity to glass and crystal. They frequently work to commission, according to a customer's ideas or needs. These craftsmen skilfully work molten and leaded glass to make furnishing objects, plates, glasses and lamps, and larger structures such as simple or decorative windows and table coverings.
Then there are the Stove Masters, who create the famous "stube" known and exported worldwide, producing healthy and durable heat. These can be made either in cement or ceramic, and then covered in hand-decorated ceramic tiles, and may be simple in structure or embellished by decorative elements.
