FEAST OF THE REDEEMER One of the most anticipated events in Venice. On Saturday July 18th, a spectacular fireworks display will light up the sky of the Venetian lagoon, while on the next day, Sunday, the festivities continue with the traditional gondola regatta. Entertainment and traditions relive together in Venice thanks to the Feast of the Redeemer. A memorable event that from water to earth celebrates the perfect balance between art, history and nature.
It is a tradition that has been repeated for more than 400 years as a day of commemoration and thanksgiving for the end of the terrible plague that decimated the population of Venice.
Every year on the third weekend of July, St Mark’s Basin becomes the fabulous setting for a spectacular fireworks display and the traditional gondola races, attracting tourism worldwide.
The festivities start on Saturday at 7 p.m with the opening of the votive bridge that connects the Zattere with the Church of the Redeemer to the Giudecca Island. Thousands of colourful boats, decked out with flowers and balloons, gather in St Mark’s Basin and Giudecca Canal while the canal banks fill with still other thousands of people ready to enjoy a great night of celebration.
The highlight of the festival is the fireworks display that begins at 11.30 p.m. and lasts well beyond midnight. The multicoloured explosions light up St Mark’s and the lagoon with all types of enchanting colours.
The event continues on Sunday with the traditional gondola races of the Redeemer which starts at 4 p.m.. and a special Mass at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer (Redentore) on the Island of Giudecca.
The Church of the Redeemer , erected to celebrate the end of the terrible plague, was commissioned by Andrea Palladio, the famous architect of Venetian Villas. The  Church was subsequently decorated by other artists, such as Tintoretto, Palma il Giovane, Paolo Veronese and many others.
