The Belluno Dolomites have many faces and the stunning landscape and cultural heritage of this area have rendered it legendary and loved the world over.

The majestic Dolomite peaks hold Cortina d’Ampezzo in their embrace, jealously guarding the Queen of the Dolomites, as it is known to all. Famous for its stunning views and fascinating history, both a magnet for skiers and mountaineers and favoured watering hole of the glitterati, Cortina d’Ampezzo is also a meeting place for a whole host of cultures and traditions, bathed in the rarefied mountain air.

An enchanted land with a wealth of history, culture and tradition, framed by the Dolomite peaks Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Marmarole, Cadini di Misurina, Pelmo, Antelao and Sorapiss, Cadore is a mosaic of woodland, pastureland, Alpine meadows and picturesque villages, such as San Vito, Pieve di Cadore, birthplace of the famous painter Titian, and Auronzo di Cadore. The lakes of Cadore, be they miracles of nature bearing witness to the last Ice Age, or human handiwork, weave a magic that is all their own further enhancing what is already a dream landscape.

Tucked away in the north-eastern corner of the Province of Belluno, framed by the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are Val Comelico and Sappada, whose landscape boasts centuries-old woodlands, pastureland and meadows dotted with little Alpine lakes and waterfalls.

“Verde Comelico” (verdant Comelico) as it was immortalised by the famous Italian poet Carducci, is a valley situated at the foot of Mount Ajarnola, with a thriving Ladin culture. Sappada, on the other hand, is a German-speaking outpost founded around the year 1000 by people originating from Tyrol and Carinthia.

Alto Agordino is famous for its Dolomite peaks Marmolada, Civetta and Pelmo that tower over the landscape of the north-western part of the Province of Belluno, marking the boundaries between the valleys. This is the dramatic backdrop to some stunning views with a succession of sleepy little villages nestling on the valley floor or perched on steep inclines at the foot of sun-kissed mountainsides and thus affording some amazing views. Sites not to be missed include Val di Zoldo, Selva di Cadore, Alleghe, Falcade and Canale d’Agordo, birthplace of Pope John Paul 1.

ValleUnica Dolomiti is the name given locally to the area wedged between the first Dolomite buttresses and the more gently rolling Alpine foothills. It covers an area stretching from Alpago, through Belluno and, following the course of the River Piave, it continues from Valbelluna to the Feltre area, amid the natural wonderland that is the Belluno Dolomites National Park.

This area includes Alpago, an oasis of green at the south-eastern edge of the province, Belluno, known as the “shining city”, the provincial capital and its ancient heart, and the Feltre valley with the historic walled city of the same name and the majestic peaks that frame it.
