"UMANITÀ > BOOK I " Umanità > book I  goes through time and space in a magical landscape

Umanità > book I, a reflection about Nature and Humans that  traverses time and space in a magical landscape traveling across oceans, galaxies and cities to explore that Nature to which Humans belong to. The piece investigates around evolutionary intelligence, the landscape of the planet, the ecological threats and the need for more conscious individual actions.

Assuming our inability to fully comprehend Nature, Umanità > book I tries to understand the language through which Nature speaks and hears. The show speaks the imagined voice of Nature: Man appears infrequently in our story, not in the anthropocentric role of observer and ruler, but as the observed one.

Umanità > book I  speaks to the audience as a composition of words, movement, video art and music, inspired by the synthesis of Samuel Beckett, the art of Anselm Kiefer, the Magic Realism genre, the technical-scientific language.

Teatro Scientifico – Teatro/Laboratorio was established by Ezio Maria Caserta and Jana Balkan back in 1969: it’s a stable structure of theatre production recognized by the MiBACT. It directs its work towards contemporary dramaturgy, reinterprets classic texts, realizes art and training projects, organizes shows and events also in partnership with Municipalities, Public and Private Institutions. Додаткова інформація
Teatro/Laboratorio was established as a research theatre by Ezio Maria Caserta and Jana Balkan back in 1969. Until 1975 the first location was a peripheral building, where the structure combined own productions and hospitality to other theatre groups: the first Italian and International theatre companies arrived there.

In 1975 the theatre group moved to the location placed in Piazzetta Fontanelle Santo Stefano, which became the new culture’s focus not only for Verona. Meanwhile Teatro/Laboratorio started to make itself nationally and internationally known, winning many awards due to both research plays and anthropological study plays, like “La Commedia dell’Arte”. Ronconi invited Teatro/Laboratorio to Biennale di Venezia in 1975, Maurizio Scaparro in 1980 and in 2007. Many tournées around the world were made too.
In 1985 Teatro/Laboratorio evolved into Cooperativa del Teatro Scientifico, producing significant theatrical events: “Sofonisba” by G.G. Trissino, 1990, Teatro Olimpico (Vicenza – Italy), starring Paola Borboni, Massimo Foschi, Andrea Bosic; “Anna Christie” by E. O’Neill, 1991, starring Mario Valdemarin; “Trappola per una rondine” by G. Contarino, 1991, starring Andrea Bosic, Arnoldo Foà; “Tommaso Moro” by Shakespeare (presumed), 1993, starring Raf Vallone; “Il martirio di S. Sebastiano” by G. D’Annunzio, 1994, starring Aldo Reggiani, Mariano Rigillo (and also 1996, starring Giorgio Albertazzi); “Judit” by F. Della Valle, 1994, starring Aldo Reggiani, Edoardo Siravo, Andrea Bosic; “Le Confessioni di S. Agostino”, 1995, starring Mariano Rigillo; moreover “Apostrofe/Antigone”, “La pazzia di Isabella”, “Io, nell’inferno della Bosnia”, “Altre storie”, “La bisbetica non domata”, “Otello - Altre verità”, “L’appuntamento”, “La tempesta. Pre-testi”, “Orgia” by P.P. Pasolini, “Commedia dell'arte 2013”, “Yesterday. L'ultimo gioco”, etc. The term “Teatro/Laboratorio” was kept to name the theatre building managed by Teatro Scientifico.

After the tragic passing of Ezio Maria Caserta (27/7/1997), Teatro Scientifico is actually directed by Jana Balkan (aka Giovanna Gianesin) with the stage management by Isabella Caserta.

On February 2002 the company was selected to represent Italy in Frankfurt during the great event for the Euro, performing “La Commedia dell’Arte”.

At the end of the long-standing controversy with the Municipality of Verona, which wants to reactivate the old disused funicular (originally starting from Teatro/Laboratorio in the Forties), on January 2011 the theatre moved to a new location placed in the ex Habsburg Arsenal of Verona.

This event has started a new phase: Teatro/Laboratorio has so become a polyvalent centre in the heart of Verona, house for artists and crossroads for arts, suitable for every kind of techno-logistical and expressive modulation, meeting point and cultural focus for the town and the province.

The Cinema Section was launched in 2005 with the purpose to realize audiovisual works to be screened inside and during the theatrical plays. In 2011 it evolved into Nuove Officine Cinematografiche, a trademark for independent movie production established by Luca Caserta.

Renowned national and international critics wrote about the theatrical activity of Teatro/Laboratorio and Teatro Scientifico. Since 1981 many degree theses has been discussed on it, among which: “Invenzione e stravolgimento scenico nel teatro di Ezio Maria Caserta”, Università Cattolica di Brescia, Mentor Prof. Emo Marconi, 1981; “Il Teatro Laboratorio (centro polivalente nel cuore di Verona)”, Università di Architettura di Venezia, Mentor prof.
